operating system not found

Could someone explain to me what this problem means....
Operating system not found
Our computer will not turn on properly. We have to keep
turning it on and off until it shows the hp screen then
windows screen. We don't have any new programs
loaded...We are just baffled. If this forum cannot help,
does anyone know who I should contact?
 
Your hard drive may be failing. If it is slow to come up to speed when
starting, it isn't being read, hence the message "Operating System not
found". How old is your HP computer? If still under warranty contact HP.
