What is the problem amd why would my operating system
disappear and return after an hour or so.. When I boot up
the computer, it says the operating system is missing, I
shut down and wait maybe an hour and it reappears. Please
help.

Probably a sign of the PSU (power supply unit) in the PC dying.... or could
be a dying hard drive, but suspect the first. Luckily a new PSU won't cost
you as much as a new hard drive... but backup anything that you really want
to keep.... for that just in case scenario.

Can also be a sign of overheating..... which again can be caused by a
failing PSU... but check ALL the fans in the case are working correctly.

Sound like Mbr got messed up.
Download windows 98 boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com
Then boot with the boot disk. Type FDISK /Mbr.
This will work even if you drive is NTFS.

Caution some people warn against this. I have had no problems with
using this switch with my system. I have do a lot of partitioning

My advise is as-is.
