I have just loaded Win XP Prof and now the following
information is visible on my desktop just above my system
tray:

Windows XP Professional
Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 (Service Pack 1)

I would like this information not to be displayed. Does
anyone know how to get rid of it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Doug is a big advocate of Tweak User Interface while I
thing that it is simply a waste of resources as it doesn't
do anything accept make simple registry changes that you
can make yourself without the wasted space of a program.
In this case go>start\run and type in regedit and click ok
or hit enter on your keyboard. Now navigate this route by
clicking the + beside the entries in the following order.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop Now click on
desktop to highlight it and open the entries in the right
panel and then look for PaintDesktopVersion REG_DWORD
0x00000001 and then right click on the
PaintDesktopVersion and then click modify and change the 1
to a 0. 1=enable 0=disable. All this and no useless
TweakUI. Keep smiling.

IMHO it's much easier for a novice to make a mistake if they
go directly into the registry. I didn't see any recommendation
to backup the registry before editing. Always a good idea.
TweakUI is easy and takes a lot of risk out of editing the
registry.
