Operating system in Print server ?

Hi all,

I have seen lot of print server devices having very low memory
i.e 1 or 2 MB.
They even support lot of protocols and have a TCP/IP stack.
I really wonder how they are supporting all these features with
that much less memory.

Can anybody tell me what operating system is used in print
servers.

Probably Linux derived or BSD.

As said, Linux, or a as assembler or compiled C direct running code.
Sometimes a proprietary chipset based OS is used.

There are several well-known and obscure operating systems that could be
trimmed down in size. Could be Linux, although in theory that would
require the release of the code, and, AFAIK, that hasn't happened.

There might even be no operating system, just an embedded program that
only performs print server functions.
