Hi all,

Tried Opera before (a couple of years ago I think) and didn't like it.
I'm giving the free version another bash and to my surprise I really am
getting on well with it.

I'm thinking of ditching Avant as a result of this, any comments?

Regards

Are these browsers suffering from the new security hole they just found
in Moz/Firefox/Netscape? If so--Moz/FF/NS seem to have a fix well
underway and expect to release it soon--how's the progress where Opera
or Avant is concerned?

Just a thought.

I've never tried Opera. I used Netscape 4.79 forever. Now I use Avant and I
really like it and the abilities it provides.

What about Opera makes you consider ditching Avant?

TBH, not a great deal. But there always seems to be talk about IE6 and
Avant (by association) being prone to security leaks.

I'm not technical enough to understand all the intricacies hence my
question.

Cheers

Opera is excellent. I've returned to it after a negative experience a
few yrs ago and I am well impressed. It could do without pretending to
be a newsgroup client. It could do without pretending to be a mail
client also, but since I use it for IMAP I can't really complain.
I had a few probs setting it as default browser, following on from
MYIE2, but I coped.
I have a slight preference for 7.10 over 7.52, but am not quite sure
why.
I love being able to toggle between different view settings, especially:
'emulate txt browser', and find it to be faster and more efficient than
Firefox. I dunno about Avant; I only tried it once and was
underimpressed.

I use Opera as my primary browser because of the speed. It renders pages
noticeably faster than any other browser I have tried. I'm using 7.53 at
the moment and luvin it :) I don't like the built in mail though. I'm a
die hard Pegasus fan. :D

I, personally, like Opera because of the 'internal' smoothness and speed
and the keyboard shortcuts for forward, backward and up & down thru
links using the Q,A,Z, X keys under my left hand.

I also like the ability to use tabbed browsing WITHOUT all the tabs
showing...for privacy's sake. (tapping the 1 or 2 keys tabs thru open
pages) THe 4 & 5 keys minimize & restore current window. You don't have
to do it that way, but you do have the choice. MANY other hotkey tricks.

It is also forgiving when you are typing or filling out a form and need
to go forward or back....it remembers what you have typed, and doesn't
erase like other browsers seem to do.

Opera also has, built in, a feature that saves the current setup in case
of a crash...

The only feature of Opera I would have them change is bookmarks, which
is quite powerful, but has a learning curve

Lots of other features that I like, but many are 'different' from IE or
Mozilla based browsers....you simply need to experiment and see if it
suits you.

Haven't got that far yet but I will try. You're right about the speed..

Yes, I've noticed this too.

Thanks for the replies one and all.

I guess you mean the vulnerabilities in the way certificates are
handled. Those only issues for browsers using the old Netscape
certificate code, so IE and Opera are not affected.

I use Opera 7.50 and I sometimes think there are things which are
different from ver 7.23 which I used for a long time.

I have lost control over right-click so web sites can stop the natural
function of the mouse.
But I am not sure if it is Opera 7.5, or if changed use of Proxomitron
is the cause.

I like the degree of customisation which Opera gives.
With the minimal skin Breeze II and some customisation the toolbars can
be minimized and the hotbar off so the screen is not cluttered and the
usable area is maximized.

Currently there is this nasty that affects Opera:

I am current using Avant and it's doing just fine for me. I tend to stay
away from the seedier side of the net (where you are likely to pick up
something you rather not).

It was released WEEKS ago.

Don't know about Avant's popupkiller, but Opera's popupkiller (set at kill
all popups) did show various popups that my current browser doesn't.
And as Corliss isn't around I'm just gonna say it: Opera is adware. I know
you can 'kill' the ads with something, but I hate that big grey bar that's
left behind.

I run Opera though webwasher :-)

Absolutely. Worse than Eprompter or ICQ.

Yep

There are OT workrounds for this.

Yeah, that works like a charm :)
Absolutely. Worse than Eprompter or ICQ.

Eprompter is sneaky, people I mailed to informed me of the
'little-promo-attached' , I never noticed myself.

Webwasher rocks.

I know, Google(groups) is our friend, but: I'm not into that. Paid for my
OS, the rest is freeware, my pc is my good site :)

I quite like Opera (I don't care about the ads on the non-graphical mode). I
liked the built-in e-mail/news/RSS client and the speed.

I keep trying others and keep going back to Opera - it's the fastest on
my slow dialup and I like the way you can see what's going on between
Opera and the remote server.

I like being able to hide the Hotlist/Panels with a single click
(whyever did they change the name?) and I find the mouse gestures very
intuitive.

Have just converted the same way, too.
Avant worked fine, I think, but it used too much memory.
