I just installed it on a Win98SE machine and had to go through 3 installs
before being successful - after the first 2 I just got errors reports when
trying to launch one of the programs (text). Is that common ?
Also it seems exceptionally large and really, really labours to startup when
I try and open one of the apps - like a steam engine - much slower than the
MSOffice suite which I still have on my machine. I had wanted to get rid of
MSOffice, but..............comments from users of OOsuite appreciated.

I got rid of Office 97 first on my 98 machine and OO installed no problem.

If you need something faster, but not as full-featured as OpenOffice, 602pro
PCsuite is quite good, has Word, Excell and a small photo editor.

does it have a presentation component ala powerpoint ?

I found that 602 had too many limitations. You have to buy components like
spell check etc. if I remember correctly.

Absolutely not common.

The reson is that MSO loads a lot of its dlls upon your Windows boot.
so, they consume memory all the time.
SO loads its dlls once it is started and therefore takes longer. On the
other hand: how often do you start your office suite?
If it really bothers you, there is an OO.org quick start module similar
to the one which Mozilla offers as a separate download somewhere on the
internet.

Are you saying that when you boot the machine, Windows installs the dlls
that MSOffice will need, therefore when you launch an MSOffice program it is
quick to load ?

Yes. Look in the startup folder, and you'll see the program
they use to do this.

What a useless scroll, all it says is "Hastur Hastur Hastur"
over and over again.

Use the "Quickstart" program.

It runs in the Tray, and speeds up loading a lot. It "pre-loads" some of the
OOo core files, and has a pretty large footprint. It's probably worth it if
you use OOo a lot.

Use the "Quickstart" program.

Unfortunately QuickStart on WIN98 often let system crash

In particular, if you start two instances of MS Access the crash is sure

I'm waiting next release of OOo - on the roadmap startup speed is on the
todos
