I've had a look at the latest OpenOffice snapshot, 1.9.71.1, which is
a preview of OOo v2 and contains a redesigned database. This is a
very preliminary report. The database imported a quite complex
multi-table relational Access database without any problems that I've
discovered yet. I tried the table, form, query and report design
functions and they were all successful.

I didn't find any bugs, yet. Perhaps we're in sight of having one of
our longest-standing wishlist items fulfilled - the all-purpose
end-user database. It's looking good.

The lack of an app that would let me do all the stuff I use Lotus
Approach for is what has kept me from looking at Linux more seriously.

Thankyou for the update.
Being on dialup I am waiting for this type of info before downloading Oo
2.0 when it arrives.

Does it also import existing Access Objects? (Forms, Reports, ...)
Does it import and use VBA or Macros?

Without that, it would not be usable for me, as I have plenty Access
Applications with much of code behind the surface...

No.

Doesn't import macros. It has its own macro scripting, though.

As it stands it might not be much use to you, then. However, this is
just a snapshot and it's not well documented in some respects. It may
be that v2 will have these capabilities. The beta is due sometime
next month, I think.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll check the V2 specs when it's
available.

AFAIK OOo 2.0 won't support importing all that. Maybe someone can write a
"translator", but that would take a lot of time for reverse-engineering I
think.

Lotus Approach for is what has kept me from looking at
Linux more seriously.

Hmm...I wonder if it'll import dbs created in Approach? I used
to use that quite a lot and have a lot of old data in that
format. I haven't re-installed Approach the last 2 times I
wiped my drive, but it would be nice to migrate that data to an
open standard.

Lotus Approach data files are in dBASE IV format, so it should be
possible to import the data into any modern database program. You
would not be able to import the proprietary forms and views, however.
While the data should remain intact, you would lose any formatting
that was not according to DB4 standards, so, for instance, if you had
field names longer than 10 characters or with spaces in them, they
would be truncated. The following fields are not part of the database
in Approach, but are maintained in the Approach file structure, so the
data in them would not be brought over: calculated fields, memo
fields, and variable fields. Still, you ought to be able to salvage
most of your important data.

I have imported several files from Approach. Just choose dbf as the
format of the imported file in the wizard.
