Opening word FIles in IE6

I recently observed that when clicking on a Microsoft Word file posted on a
web page, that the file opens in the browser window. Does this happen only
if I have Microsoft Word installed on the computer? Or is there a built in
viewer (plugin?) in IE6 that opens the file whether or not Word is
installed?

An interesting thought.
I am afraid I have never tried it, though I am dubious that it would
work. It doesn't work for a computer without Word that has .doc files
associated with Wordpad so I doubt it would work with .doc files
associated with the viewer, as I don't recall the installation being
particularly sophisticated.

Try the Office group and see if someone there has done it.

I will watch the thread there and see how you get on.

I tried it out... here's what I did and what happened:

I set a system restore point, uninstalled Word 97, installed Word Viewer
2003, and then tried opening a doc file on a web site. I got an
open/download dialog box. I selected open, and it opened up in the Viewer,
but not in the browser. I don't think that extra step is too terribly
onerous. I don't expect that the 97/2000 viewer would behave any
differently.

I then tried to restore my system, and system restore wouldn't work! What
it's there for I don't know... it has yet to save my skin even once!

I was afraid of that. The results of your experiment are what I
thought would happen. It looks like you need Word to have the facility
of opening within IE6. I can find no way of making the older Word
viewer open in IE.

Pity about the restore. I assume you are using XP and if so, it may be
worth posting to an XP group to see if you can find out why it fails.

Alan,

This works for me with (I guess, the old) WordViewer
but I would be surprised if it doesn't also work with a newer one.

Keyword for searching is BrowserFlags

E.g. do the reverse of that article. <eg>

However, just using Folder Options File Types
and toggling Browse in same window is equivalent to
the registry edits in the Method 2 section AFAIK

Hi Robert,

How embarrassing!
Thanks. I thought I had done that before but I shouldn't trust my
memory all the time. I just downloaded the old Word Viewer 97 again
and installed it on a computer with Win ME that doesn't have Word and
it does what you indicate without any Registry edits. It opens .doc
files in IE using either Open or Send To. (It is not connected to the
Internet but that should be enough of a test.

I shall inform the OP.

Hi LuDean

Try reading the response by Robert below.
Sorry for the error on my part.
