Im using Word 2002.

I tried out a PDF document Printer driver product. Didn't like it and
uninstalled it. Now when I click on a Word Document Icon on my desktop I
just open Word, as opposed to opening the document. The file association is
there but there is something somewhere that won't trigger the opening of
the document. I'd appreciate some help on restoring this.

TIA

I've further discovered that if I click initially on the document icon Word
just opens with no document, if I click on the document icon after that it
opens.

I running on Windows XP

I have further information.
I found that if I click on a Word file that I haven't tried to open before,
it opens fine. If I try to open it again, I get the problem as described.
I thought that maybe this has something to do with normal.dot because a
window came up during the installation of the PDFdriver that said it was
going to change normal.dot, but I said no.

I went looking for normal.dot, but I can't find it in Windows XP.

Is this my problem?

More information:

When I first click on the .doc icon Word just opens up with nothing, the
address bar reads "Microsoft Word" no document 1 nothing else. I click
again without closing the first Word on it or any other .doc and it opens
just fine.

Also I did locate normal.dot, I changed its name and restarted, problem
still here.

You might try recreating the file associations by going to Start/Run
and running this command:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

Note this will not start Word but you should note some activity. Then
trying opening a document.

I did an open/with initiall by left/clicking the holding shift and right
click, said to open with Word. No change.

I think I am now on to something, in checking the MVP site found the
article "How to find out whether anyh Word Add ins have been installed".
What I'm finding is when I do a Tools/templates and Add-ins I have a
suspiciously looking docprinter.doc checked off and attached to Normal
which means it is currently loaded. My only option showing is to ADD, and
Remove is greyed out. I unchecked it and as lond as I don't shut down Word
everthing seems to work okay.

DO I just to into the Office startup folder and delete it? How can I get
rid of this add in correctly?

By the way, I have uninstlled and reinstalled Word. no change.

The command I previously provided is different than using the "Open
With" command. The /r switch will create the actions for Word when
open documents outside the Word application. Including the "Open With"
command.

If you are able to start with without opening a document I doubt the
global template is cauisng an issue but it doesn't hurt to rule it
out.

You can either delete it or move it out of the folder. Until you are
sure you don't need the template I would move it out of the folder.
You can always move it back later.

Usually doesn't. Typically the inability to open a document outside of
Word means there is a problem with the file association. The file
association contains instructions for the operating system and sends
the data to Word. These can be easily recreated, in a matter of
seconds, by going to Start/Run and running:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

Tried the /r option suggestion, it did not change the symptom, in fact it
caused significantly delayed the opening of any Word document. I decided to
reinstall the pdfprinter produce I was not happy with and then immediately
did an uninstall, and that seems to have corrected the problem.
