Opening Web Folders on localhost

Hi,

What's the secret to getting XP to open a locally hosted Web Folder?

I have a bunch of PCs in a network, one runs XP Professional, the
others
run NT 4. I have several Webdav Repositories using Apache and mod_dav.
On the XP machine, I have two Webdav repositories, one requiring
authentication, and the other not.

I can open a Web Folder on any of my repositories from NT machines,
but
the XP machine will only open remotely hosted repositories. So far,
the only
way that I have found to get XP to open locally hosted repositories is
to use NetTool to trick XP into thinking the the repositories are
remote. I suspect that using virtual hosting may also work.

If I try to open a locally based repository (using either localhost or
the actual machine name), XP displays the userid/password dialog even
for the
repository that has no authentication configured. But it does NOT
present the userid provided but insists on prepending "hostname/"
(not the domain name).
Can I convince XP not to do this?

PS I particularly like the XP help on this. Help says follow the
instructions
in the "Add Network Place Wizard". Of course this wizard has minimal
instructions and does NOT even mention Web Folders.
