Several weeks ago, my computer's opening page changed (perhaps by MS because
of auto updates...I dislike this opening display but cannot find a route to
get rid of it and return to my original opening display of my shortcut
icons..anyone please??

Please describe what your "computer's opening page" is. Remember that we
can't see your machine from here. While you're at it, describe what
your "original opening display of...." means. Are you talking about the
Desktop? The Welcome Screen? What?

I'm wondering if this is the same thing that happened on my computer recently
after installing a network adapter. Before doing so my Welcome Screen showed
little boxes and pictures and I clicked on the name of the account I wanted
to use, then it changed to a box showing the name and add password. Also when
the computer opened and I clicked start, the top little picture I had there
had gone too, leaving only my name. When I tried to put my pic back from User
Accounts I was told that something refering to RtlGina2.dll file used by some
program had disabled the way I can change the views. Anyway, I removed said
Network Adapter and my screen welcome went back to normal though reading up
on said file had me looking at sites which said my registry could be messed
up....not sure about that stuff but every thing seems back to normal....for
now.....

Sorry about that Malke: I guess I took it for granted that most of us have a
similiar opening page display...This concerns my desktop. Several weeks ago,
when starting up, the first thing I saw was " welcome " across the face of
the screen, then it disappeared and the computer opened with all of my
shortcut icons in place so that i could get started. This has been the case
for months and I was happy with this. However, a few weeks back, the opening
display now has a small welcome on one side of the screen, and a " user "
icon ( which one can add a guest icon if so desired) which you then click,
and then it says " loading user settings"...This page is not necessary in my
case, as I am the sole user...the bottom of the page also says that once I
log on, I can go to control panel to make any changes...but I have not been
able to eliminate this opening page format. Am I making myself clear..and
thanks for your reply. Terry.

Much better, thank you. You were automatically logging into your user
account and being taken directly to the Desktop. Now you are not and
that is why you see the Welcome Screen. It is possible that you
installed something that required .Net 1.1. Printer software is known
for this. If this is the case, then you can simply go to Windows Update
and install the updates for .Net 1.1. This will return you to the
automatic logon.

Otherwise, see this link for a very simple fix to restore the automatic
logon:
