My flying club has text files (.txt) files posted at their web site but when
I click on them to read/open them , explorer some how sees it as a php file
and wants to use MS picture it! to view the file.

Why is this and can it be fixed?

Thanks
Bill

Sure but it maybe a hassle as you have to register to see the files I am
talking about.

www.avsim.net the file library section. When you look at a file to download
it has a feature on the right called "zip dive" when you get to that page
there are readme.txt files which I want to read before downloading the
entire package. I had asked the avsim folks about it and they said it was an
IE issue not them.

thanks

Bill

sorry www.avsim.com

I am going back to avsim and complain. I just tried another site with the
same feature and the txt file opens in the browser...so it must be an avsim
problem.

If you have any ideas though I would appreciate some ammo :-)

Thanks for your interest and time.

Bill,
Since the site requires login registration, I am unable to access the file directory
containing the text files you quote.
Just to confirm that you are able to view text files in IE, go to this site;
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Scroll to this link; http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt
Right-click and select "open in a new window".
This will confirm that you are able to access [*.txt] (text) files in IE.

Please post back if I can be of further assistance to you.

Regards,
Silj

Silj the link you gave me worked ok. I was able to view the .txt file. It
must be a problem with avsim and their set up. I have written them about it
to see what they say.

Thanks again

Not necessarily. What is the protocol involved at the avsim site?
E.g. if the Status bar shows you the URL there is ftp://... testing
with an http URL might not be a sufficient simulation of your problem
scenario.

BTW one public site which does use ftp in this way that I know of
is Symantec. If you can open one of their ReadMe.txt files
you might have a better test.

Etc.

Not sure if I follow you completely...here is the link to the site I am
trying to view text files http://library.avsim.net/zipdiver.php?DLID=60204

I have been able to read .txt at other sites. Where at symantec do you mean?

Thanks

I should mention it works well with the firefox browser. But I would rather
stick to IE for other reasons for now

Great! Then - *hopefully* it's an issue with the site, not IE or file associations.
Post back if the issue occurs with other sites.
