I have a problem that is stumping me. I run a small peer
to peer network in my classroom using Dreamweaver to make
the home page. On this network I have posted Powerpoints
links so my students can log on and select the study
materials they need. We have been using NT 4.0 and
everything operates smoothly. I have upgraded two
computers to Windows 2000 professional and when the
student logs on to my net and they try to open a
PowerPoint presentation, a screen pops up asking if they
want to open the file or download it the their computer.
The only choice that they can choose is to download.
The "open file" message is there, but it is grayed out
and this selection is unavailable. I have tried going
into the Internet Explorer properties and can not find
anything that will allow me to open the file and view it
from the network

Is the PowerPoint application or the PowerPoint viewer program installed
on the Windows 2000 computers and registered into the OS?

I have PowerPoint installed on these machines (they are
part of the Office package) I really think the problem
has to do with Internet Explorer rejecting the "pps"
extention. I'm assuming Microsoft wants you to scan the
file before opening it.

On the effected machines go to Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder settings... | File Types | Select the file type you are having truble with | Advanced | Select Open | Make sure Confirm open after download is NOT checked.

If you are using Group Policy at these machine's servers you will be unable to do this if the Group Policy is set up to disallow this. This is a virus susceptibility.
