opening ports

I asked this question yesterday, but it was not fully answered and it is too
far back to for anyone to go looking for.

Task: To get MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messanger to connect, AOL AIM to
download, and Symantec Antivirus to update virus definations. To open ports
so they can connect?
Conditions: MS Firewall- Disabled, Symantec Antivirus- Disabled, System
Restore will not work, every time its used, upon reboot it says could not
restore system to *Date given*, try another date. XP Pro SP2.

I ran many scans for spyware/adware, found some thought I removed it. I
think it closed the majority of my ports. The reason I disabled the Anti
Virus and Firewall was to see if it was blocking the ports, but that was not
the problem.

PLEASE HELP!
Thank you much,
Randall

Please go through these malware removal steps systematically:

If your Symantec AV is outdated and/or you let your subscription lapse,
your computer may be infected with a virus. Scan with either Sysclean
(explained at the link above) or Dave Lipman's Multi-AV and then do the
non-viral malware scanning.

You should not have to disable any firewalls to get any instant
messaging clients to connect or an antivirus to update. You should not
need to open any ports to do any of this. You don't mention how you are
connecting to the Internet, but unless you have some specialized proxy
server in place, you should normally be able to use IM's and have your
av update without doing anything special. Therefore, something is wrong
on your computer.

You may want to take the machine to a professional computer repair shop
(not your local version of BigStoreUSA) to have it looked at. There is
no shame in doing this; I don't hesitate to take my car to the mechanic
when something is wrong with it.
