Whenever someone with Windows 98 sends me a .jpg file,
when I open in Windows XP it says it is a .dat file. What
happened to the file format? Is there something in XP
that needs to be done to support 98 pic files?

I wonder if the following KB article would offer
some useful info:

The file type association for .jpg files is screwed up on your system.

I would open file type associations and delete the one for .jpg.

Then, double-click on any .jpg file and when XP wants to know what program
to use to open it, point it to the app you want to use. That will fix it.
