opening pdf files through a link on a web page

I have trouble opening pdf files through a lynk on a web
page, I select the option and then a blank page opens
without the file, sometimes I can open it using the save
as target options, but other times I can't.

I have the same problem with Adobe Reader and haven't found the root
cause. I suspect that having Adobe Acrobat 4.0 and Adobe Reader 6.0
installed on the same machine might have a contributory factor, but
can't prove it. I've checked all settings in both Adobe's and in both
browsers (Internet Explorer and Mozilla) and nothing seems amiss.

I've found that if I launch Adobe Reader 6.0 and have it running when I
click on a PDF link in a browser, it works as expected.

So, it's some sort of program launch issue ... but I can't see how to
fix. So I just load the Reader and I can ignore the problem
