Opening new files in the same program window

Trying again, hoping my subject title change will attract an answer this
time......

Here's my situation.

Recent hard drive failure.
Time to upgrade anyway.
Re-installed Win2K from the same disk as before.
Did all the same security updates as before.
SP 4 installed as before.
..NET 2.0 installed as before.
Office XP Pro (some Office 2003 updates) installed as before.
Everything is identical to the old hard drive with the exception of the
drive itself.
Same system, same motherboard, same processor, same memory chips, same
periferals and other hardware.

Here's the problem:

Double-clicking on a .jpg file, for example, opens my image editor with the
file ready for editing. Previously, double-clicking on a second .jpg file
would open the new file in the same instance of my image editor. Since the
re-install, it opens a new instance of the program for each new image opened
in this fashion (before anyone asks, it is not only my image editor that is
now doing this, it is every program, including all of my Office programs,
Winzip, Adobe Reader, etc.....) All used to open the new file in the same
instance (except FrontPage which opens new pages depending on whether or not
they were in the same web that was already opened).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me insane. I've
already tried changing the settings in the Folder Options tab. No
difference.

Thanks in advance.

To turn on Single Document Interface (SDI) in Microsoft Office 2003
applications Tools|Options|View and check "Windows in Taskbar". In either
case there is only one instance application's executable running. Task
Manager|Processes will confirm this.

For the others you'll need to get in touch with the application developer.

Why, it worked fine before I re-installed Windows. In fact, it's worked the
right way ever since Windows 95, up to Windows XP on one system, all with
the same software (with updates, of course). It's just on this one machine
with this one re-install of the operating system where is no longer works.
What would the 3rd party software have to do with that changing?

Also, I just looked and "Windows in Taskbar" is already checked in Word,
which is one of the programs where this problem is happening. For every Word
document that is open, there is a separate instance of Word running.

But they all did exactly what they were supposed to do previous to this
re-install of the operating system. The new operating system was the only
change to the system.

No, I did not, but I had several Word processes open on the taskbar. Now it
is showing only once, regardless of how many files I open (which is the way
it used to work before I re-installed Windows 2000. I changed NOTHING in
Word when I re-installed it).

Once again, ALL of my programs where double-clicking on a file opens that
program, used to work the right way (it might not be considered the right
way, but it's the way I wanted it and the way it always worked before). It
is only since the re-install of Windows 2000 SP-4 that I am having this
issue. I have another system running the same OS and the same software and
that system reacts the way this system used to react.

The only difference is this system has had a new install of Windows 2000 SP4
(same system updates and software versions as the other backup system and
also the same as before the hard drive melted).

I could understand if it were since I moved from Windows 98 to Windows 2000,
but it is not. For nearly 5 years, I have been running Windows 2000 and my
system has ALWAYS worked that way until about a month ago when I had to
re-install due to a hard drive failure. I replaced the hard drive with an
identical drive (it was still under warranty from the manufacturer) so
that's not it either (I've had different hard drives react differently to
system updates or re-installs). I re-installed from scratch just because it
was due anyway. I started with a clean slate. No add-ons, nothing but the
Service Packs and critical updates, not even driver updates yet, and the
problem was already evident. Even after completely updating everything,
including Office XP and 2003 components, Windows and Office updates from the
Microsoft update site and then updating all of the drivers and 3rd party
software, back to exactly where the system was before the hard drive failed,
it still had this problem.

I cannot believe that EVERY piece of 3rd party software I have installed
could suddenly go bad or not respond like it used to, all at the same time,
when the only change to the entire system was Windows was re-installed. I
have looked at all of the software for some setting that says "open new
files in the same window" or something like that, but I cannot find any such
setting in any of them. Besides, I never needed that setting before.

There is no global operating system setting that controls this behavior. As
you now know it is an application specific setting for office products. In
the end you'll need to get in touch with the application vendor.
