Opening multiple mdbs

As I understand it, when designing a multi-user app with MS Access, one should
use an Access front-end (FE) for the code, and an Access back-end (BE) for the
data.

Question: How does one open the BE? With a connection string using ODBC?

I also understand, that under certain circumstances, it may be desirable to use
another mdb for a large quantity of temporary data.

Question: Same as above. Plus, can I have BOTH open at the same time? If so,
how?

Why do I ask? Because I can't seem to do either. I HAD been able to create my
"temp" mdb, but could never create the necessary table(s). NOW I can't even
create it. I would HOPE it's something simple that I'm missing, but at this
point...

Typically, you create Linked Tables in your front-end that point to the
actual tables in your back-end. You cannot use ODBC to connect an Access
front-end to an Access back-end.
