Whenever I click on a link in IE6 (especially one that links to a .pdf file)
I get an error message that "the page cannot be dosplayed". I have then tried
the same link from a different PC and succeeded

Hi Timbow :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following and see if it helps:

IE browser software defaults Acrobat Reader to "OFF" to display PDF files.
You can restore the setting to"ON" by finding an Acrobat document and then
opening it.

Then click Edit> Preferences> Internet> check the box next to "Display PDF
in browser"

If still no joy, try the information here:

also..

Reset PDF File associations
Open Windows Explorer (not IE)
Find and select any PDF file and right click on it and click on Open with...
If the program you use to read the PDF's in not there, then close the box
With the PDF file still highlighted
Go to Tools> Folder Options-File Types
Scroll down the list until you find the program that should open the PDF and
click it
then click the Change button, scroll down the list to the program you need
and click on it, then click OK and close out. Then try the PDF again.
