Opening JPEG files created in Switzerland and opened in California

While on vacation in Switzerland, my Smartmedia disk was
full, so I went into a camera store and had the photos
transfered onto CD. I had them show me the pictures
worked on a computer before erasing so I could use
Smartmedia card later.

When I got home, I attempted to pull the photos up on my
computer. It shows all the JEPG files there, but I cannot
open the pictures. I get the famous grey square with the
little red check in it at the top left of windows
explorer where the pictue should have opened.

Besides the obvious question of how to open the pictures
on the CD (Help anyone?), I wonder if there is a
difference in the Windows program in Switzerland and
California that causes this error. I sent these to a
friend in the UK and he says he simply drags the photos
into explorer and they open. We have tried multiple,
multiple computers both at work and at home and cannot
open the files.

This is a once in a lifetime trip that we would really,
really like to see the pictures from. Impossible for us
to duplicate trip.

Anyone have thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
