Opening in a slide show

Is there any way of setting Powerpoint so that when a
presentation opens it is already in a slide show format
instead of having to select that option from the menu bar.

I thought that maybe I could accomplish that by saving as
a PowerPoint show but that didn't work

When you saved it as a show, and then reopened it, how did you open it. If you right click, and because it should have a .pps extension, your options should be Show as the first item, also if you double click on the pps file it should open in the slide show mode.

The file does have a pps ext but when I open it, it is not
in slide show mode. I am using '97

Again, how are you opening it?

Are you double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer?

Or are you opening PPT and then using File/Open?

If you're double-clicking in Explorer and it's still opening in edit
mode (as a PPT file would), your file association settings might need
tweaking.

I'm having the same trouble: how to create a slide show
that will open as such without needing to click on the
icon on the lower right. I want this to be a web page
that anyone could visit, so the File/SaveAs option was
htm, but that file still won't open as a slide show.
What Save options am I missing?

HTML files won't open as slide shows, they'll open in a browser window.

PPS files (File/Save as/PowerPoint Show) will open in Show mode.

PPT files will open in "Normal" View (aka Edit Mode).
