Robert G.

I used to be able to open files directly from my desktop
by clicking on the repective icon. For example, when I
clicked on the Bank of America icon, I would
automatically be sent to the sign in page. Now when I
click on the icon, I am asked to "choose the program you
want to use to open this file." Get me back to my
original operation and I would be so happy. Thanks

Hi Robert G :-)

by clicking on the repective icon. For example, when I

Try the following and see if it helps:

You might try the repair tool in TweakUI if you have it. Open TweakUI, go
to the repair tab and repair both the "Icons" and "File Associations". If
you don't have TweakUI, you can get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstat...g/NTTweakUI.asp

or.....

Right-click on the icon, select properties, and correct the Target file path
to point to the program that it's supposed to open.

Example full file path to Winamp media player:
C:\ProgramFiles\Winamp\winamp.exe

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Let's see, the easy way (based upon the symptom you described):

Left-Click to Select (highlight) the icon in question>hold shift
key>R-Click>select open with>scroll the list and select the program you
think (know) will open it>be sure to Un-Check the "always use this program
to open this type of file" for the moment. Once you are sure it is the
correct one for your purpose, repeat the process, but this time *Checkmark*
the "Always use this program to open this......"

Now, if the icon you refer to is an IE shortcut that is a HTML Document
(extension:HTM or HTML) which should open with iexplore.

The hard way:

You can also do this:
Folder options> File Types
The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating system. The
possible paths are:

Explorer - View - Folder Options - File Types
Explorer -Tools - Folder Options - FileTypes
Start - Settings - Folder Options - File Types
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Folder options - File Types

Once there, highlight the uppermost file>scroll down to the file type(s) in
question using the down arrow key> eventually you will see the type you are
looking for (observe extensions and types as you do this)> click the edit
(or advanced) button and edit the entry so that the file will be made to
*open* with the left-click command.
