I don't know all the proper names and phrase's for
computer lingo.
So my question is this when you want to open a file and
that box comes up that says "open with" I have no clue
what to do I have choosen differnat things but nothing
opens them. I go to the website thing also but I don't
know what to do.
Can some one please tell me what to do.and also tell me
what this box is called so I can maybe find some info on
it. thanks Dolly

Hi Dolly,

The "open with" dialog occurs when the operating system (WindowsXP) does not
have an associated program for a specific file extension. It is waiting for
you to tell it what program to use to open a file. If you do not see the
file extensions (normally a period followed by three characters after the
file name), go to the control panel/folder options/view tab, and uncheck the
line that reads "hide file extensions for known file types", then click
apply/ok.

Which program you use to open the file depends upon what the extension is.
For instance, a .doc file can be opened with MSWord or with Wordpad, but is
not limited to just these two. However, there are literally thousands of
these extensions, so I cannot guess what it is you are trying to open. If
you would like to post back with the type of file you are trying to open, we
may be able to be of further assistance.

Another add in to the advice you've already received: Not every file needs
to opened by the user. Many are used by the operating system and programs
to run properly. Besides the huge possibility that the instructions they
contain will be in a form that is not viewable, there is potential for
damage if opened inappropriately.

These plug-in programs typically add menu commands in the
base application. Other programs, when opened will have
their own configuration menu.

You probably don't need to "open" the exe file, but need to
"install" usually by double-clicking or right clicking the
file and selecting "install". See the site from which you
download a program for FAQ or HELP.

As others have said, download accelerators are frowned upon
by most ISPs because bandwidth is shared. I know that the
local cable company put a cap on download speed to cut off
the "tweaks" that had been done so a few "band width hogs"
would not crowd out all the other users.

This TechTV article by Phil Allingham is a rewrite of the original
review he wrote. I saw the original TV broadcast and read the
original review. Hell, that's why I've been a Proxyconn subscriber for
over a year. I must say that Phil Allingham was not the
quintessential journalist reviewing a product. I was shocked at how he
placed his own feelings into the review and judged the product in that
light.

The original review stated that the only reason Phil Allingham didn't
like the product is that "they're spammers". Keep in mind that this
article was written over a year ago. Well, after a huge uproar from
the TechTV viewers (based on posted comments), Phil Allingham reposted
his story. I'm sure the TechTV legal team had him rewrite that review
as "Slander" and "Defamation" were written all over it.

Oh, BTW, Proxyconn does have on their site "DSL Speed for Dialup."
Just goes to show how "knowledgeable" Phil Allingham really is.
