Opening files in designated program rather than the browser

Hi,
I want IE to open files, such as Word & Excel files, in Word or Excel etc.
rather than in the browser. I can't find where to change this, can anyone
help? It causes problems, for example, when I'm downloading data from online
banking - the excel file opens in the browser and I can't get back to my
online banking because it logs you out if you use the back button....
Many thanks,
Jane

Hi Jane :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Go to Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types.
Select the document type you want and click the Advanced tab
Uncheck "Browse in same window" if checked.

Hope this helps :-)

This works for my PC, but what if I want to put something out on our company
Intranet. Is there any HTML coding that can force documents to open in the
appropriate office program instead of in an Internet Explorer browser window?

I suffer a problem with the same root:
Users believe IE has hung, and they Alt-Ctrl-Del IE away. What really
happens is that there is a hidden window behind it, asking if you want to
open the Excel file as read only. No warning, no sign, no blinking...

Could I pass an argument from IE to Excel indicating it to open the file as
read-only?

The recommendation about opening the file as read-only must remain as it is
otherways dangerous for occasional users. Any other solution?
Thanks
