Opening Excel file from a link on intraet page

I am running Windows XP Pro and Office XP. I have a link
on our intranet page that points to an Excel document.
When I click on the link, the document does not appear to
load. If I start scrolling, the Excle document will
start appearing. How do I get the document to open in
Excel instead of IE.
