Whenever I come to open an attachment from an email it always opens in
wordpad rather than word processor so all the documents are distorted and
have symbols instead of text
How can I rectify this?

You have a wordprocessor program (other than Wordpad) installed on your
machine?

What word processor do you have installed? If you don't have one, then
that is why the attachment isn't opening properly - Wordpad is pretty
simple and can't read the file.

For example, if the attachments were created in MS Word, then you need
to have MS Word - or another word processing program that can read MS
Word files - installed. You would get Word at the store. For a free
office suite that can read MS Word (and Corel Word Perfect) files, you
can use OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org.

It depends on the word processor included in Works. Earlier versions of
Works were a great bargain because they had the real MS Word in them.
My understanding is that recent versions have the "Works Word
Processor" which is not MS Word. You can try opening the file in your
Works word processor to see whether it can read it or not. Save the
attachment to your hard drive. Then right-click the file and choose
Open With and pick your Works word processor. See what happens and post
back if you need more help.

Or you may wish to post directly to a Works newsgroup since this is not
an operating system issue but an application issue.

There is a WIDE variety of file types that attachments can be. Some file
types can be read by Wordpad, but some can't. Nobody will be able to
help much if you don't indicate what file type the attachments you want
to open are. SOME word processor files, including those from Microsoft
Word, can be opened with Wordpad BUT it may not recognize ALL of the
formatting generated by Word versions newer than your operating system.

Of course Wordpad doesn't have many of Word's editing functions.

Be aware that there is also a WIDE variety of fonts. If you receive a
document that specifies a font that is not installed on your computer
some text might not be readable.

Word Viewer 2003

"View, print and copy Word documents, even if you don't have Word
installed. This download is a replacement for Word 97 Viewer and all
previous Word Viewer versions."

"With Word Viewer 2003, you can view, print, and copy document contents
to another program. However, you cannot edit an open document, save a
document, or create a new document. This download is a replacement for
Word 97 Viewer and all previous Word Viewer versions."

Microsoft

Microsoft has sold some packages like "Home Essentials" that included
"Microsoft Works", "Microsoft Word" and some other personal productivity
applications. those packages were often much less expensive than the
various Office suite packages. Some computer manufacturers and retailers
include(d) this and similar incentives with new computers.

There are also some alternate applications that can read "Microsoft
Word" files AND other word processor formats. These include the free
OpenOffice.org suite.

Right click on the file & choose Open With. Browse to the WordPad & OK. If
you're sure that's what you want to use , by default, you can put a check in
Always Use this program.
