I have Norton Anti Virus on my PC. If I open an attachment which turns out
to be some kind of virus will Norton intercept it?

Peter.

If Norton doesn't intercept it, it will at least prove something:
You should have listened to the folks who told you not to open unexpected
attachments.

If you want to be the first infectee in the next outbreak, try it. There is
often a 1-2 day lag before the AV venders have time to write the
definitions. Think about it...............

yes it should intercept it right away

pop up should appear

I think what is his saying that if he *OPENS* the infected attachment will
NAV stop it infecting his machine, well I have NAV set to scan all my
emails and detects ALL infected attachments . I think the message going out
is that if you are not 100% sure about the attachment dont take the chance
and just delete it.

NAV should NEVER be a replacement for common sense and good operating practice.
Relying on AV software to intercept a new virus is akin to sticking you head
through a hole in a fence to see what is on the other side. There are safer
ways to find out, and you probably don't need to know anyway.

It is not 100% guaranteed. It'll only detect viruses it knows about.

It would if the malware was one that it was capable of
detecting and intercepting, and its active scan option
was on, and it was properly configured, and it was 100%
effective at doing its job.

If Norton does intervene, then that means that you have
done something wrong ~ you should never allow your
actions to place your data at risk and *rely* on any AV
to intervene on your behalf.

maybe... it depends on whether norton is configured to scan things in
real-time, whether the installation is sane (not broken), and whether
your particular installation of norton is capable of detecting that
particular virus...

in most cases the answer will probably be yes, but there will still be
a significant proportion of cases where the answer will be no (often
for new viruses, or if you haven't been keeping up to date) so you
really should think twice about that nasty habit of opening attackments...

NEVER EVER open an attachment in Outlook Express or Outlook.
It's a surefire way of getting exposed if the attachment
contains some kind of malware.

ALL attachments should be saved to disk using the File-Save
Attachments... command in the upper left hand corner of
these programs.
