opening attachments locks system

I have a problem using outlook 2002 on a new dell windows
xp pro machine. (latest patches have been applied for
both).- when opening any type of attachment, oulook will
lock-up and then the system locks-up and has to be
restarted. tried uninstalling outlook 2002 and
reinstalling , applying patches but no help.
system is virus free / spyware free too.
haven't seen this happen before so has me somewhat
puzzeled.

I changed the security settings from high to medium and the problem went away
