Opening a .pst file without importing it (keeping it separate)

Hi,

I need to open a .pst file in a way that keeps it totally
separate from my current outlook files and folders, and
edit it. I can't figure out a way to do this as I've
always chosen "import" when trying to view a .pst file in
the past.

I suspect perhaps I need to create a different user
profile in order to open another .pst file and keep it
separate, but I can't figure out how since MS's website
instructions for doing so are only for if you have a
corporate/workgroup setup (and I don't, and am unsure if
there would be bad consequences of switching it at this
point).

I suspect there's some simple answer to doing this, as
Word can easily open two different documents, why can't
outlook open two different .pst files and keep them
separate? If anyone knows, your help would be HIGHLY
appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi Diane,

Thanks so much for replying so promptly. I did try doing
what you said, unfortunately, all that happens is that the
header says "Personal Folders" and the screen is otherwise
blank. When I click back on "contacts" or "task list"
it's clear that I'm still in my currently active .pst
file, not the different one I was trying to open.

Does that make sense? I hope I'm explaining this clearly
enough. I think I need to find a way to "close" my
currently active file in order to be able to open the
new .pst file without co-mingling them. But by default my
Outlook just opens the currently active file.

Thank you for your help.

if you just want to view the contents, use file, open, personal folders.

Use your folder list view - open the PST file - expand the list.

Thank you both! I didn't know about the folder list
view. It was a simple solution, but I never would have
located it without you. Thanks again!!!
