I am the network adminsitrator and need to open a Word 97
document that is password protected. The staff member who
created and protected the document no longer works here.
Any ideas?

Delete it and move on. There are commercial programs around (it's called
'cracking') that claim to retrieve lost passwords, but a) they're expensive,
b) the vendors are dubious to say the least, and c) I've never yet seen a
posting from someone offering a credible first-hand account of it actually
working.

If it's just protected for forms, you can remove the protection by inserting
the file into a fresh document. Otherwise, take Jezebel's advice to delete
it and move on.

Jennie, have you ever actually *seen* one of these applications work? (I'm
not disputing here, just that I'm sceptical and I've never seen a posting
with *first-hand* evidence.)
