I feel brain dead. I knew this before, but can't
remember. How do I reset my browser to open new windows
when I change web pages? Right now, it opens in the same
window every time.

Thanks ahead of time for your assistance.

Terry,

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab
3. Uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts"
4. Close Internet Explorer

The Reuse windows for launching shortcuts setting is used to determine whether a new or existing instance of Internet Explorer is used when exploring a Web site using one of the following methods:

a. Double-clicking an Internet shortcut (.url file) from within Windows Explorer.
b. Opening a URL by clicking Start, and then clicking Run.
c. Using a desktop toolbar, such as the Address or Links bar.

When this setting is selected, an open instance of Internet Explorer is used to display any Web site loaded using the above methods. If the setting is cleared, then the above methods start a new instance of Internet Explorer.

.

This is interesting. I have the exact opposite problem.
For some reason, my brower always opens new windows and I
end up with several every time I try to extend a search. I
have no idea how it started or why. How do I get it back
to one window.

Also, a new search toolbar has appeared at the top and I
can't get rid of it permanently. Anyone know how to do
this?

Thanks!

I did that and it still all opens in the same window.
That is why I thought I had forgotten something. Any
other ideas?

How are you accessing the webpages. If just clicking a hyperlink. Press SHIFT and click. opens a new window.

Hi,

This is fantastic. Works like a charm. Greatly
appreciated. No more looking at extra useless toolbars.
Many, many thanks.

Still having the problem with my IE browser opening new
pages every time. I checked the "reuse" and it's checked.
I even unchecked it and checked it again, but still can't
get IE to stop opening new windows. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for your help!

How are you accessing the new URL? [from Taskbar "Addressbar"? or Typing a url in IE Addressbar itself or clicking links on OE]

Try Reset Web Settings in IE

I

Which OS? Try an IE Repair or the following subset of one.

FWIW here is a list of commands created by extracting from fixie.inf
what an IE Repair would do for Windows 2000 users:

regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

What that represents is the set of re-registrations which
FixIE.inf indicates would be done for Base.W2K.AddReg

N.B. that neither mshtmled.dll nor actxprxy.dll have an entry point
called DllInstall and hence the /i option can not be used for them.

Neither msjava.dll nor shell32.dll are referred to by FixIE.inf
but those are two other modules which are often suggested to XP users
as needing re-registration for repairing in various circumstances.

The re-registration that you are mostly likely to need is the one for
mshtml.dll. One possibility is that you experimented with a comment
that you may have seen from Jim Byrd that deleting the DDE Topic
information from the editing actions for certain URL: types can be used
to cause *all* links to open in a new window (e.g. a suggestion for those
who *want* your symptom.)

Note that such re-registrations are normally done by an IE Repair
during a boot while nothing is running so at the very least I think
that it would be best to ensure that iexplore.exe is not active in your
task list. (Close all visible IE windows and then check that the
iexplore.exe is not in the list of Processes in Task Manager.
Ctrl-Shift-Esc,Ctrl-Tab,i,i,...)
