What is the solution to opening / not opening a new browser window, when
clicking on a link in a website? My computer seems to do it at
random..............

Could you help me with where this is? Is it in advanced settings of Internet
options>tools?

Hi Happy :-)

You don't mention which version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following and see if it helps:

To open Links in the same browser window:

Go to IE> Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> Browsing> check "Reuse windows
for launching shortcuts."

Hope this helps.

Thanks-- I'm happier now! I am assuming then that if this is unchecked, the
links should open in a new browser window...... but that doesn't seem to be
happening. Are there certain conditions it will, and certain that it won't?

No...sorry...I was under the assuption that you wanted the links to open in
the same window. Uncehck that setting.

You haven't told us the version of Windows you are using, but, there are
some 3rd party toolbars that can affect how windows work in IE. If you have
any 3rd party toolbars such as Google, Yahoo, or MSN installed, disable
them. If you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it. Other types of software
can also affect the way IE works, such as Zone Alarm Pro, Norton, McAfee,
Kerio, ad blockers, popup blockers,m etc. So you should check any such
programs you may have installed.

The html code is the make up of the site you are visiting. You can't change
the code of a web site you are visiting.

Thank you for this. I find I have a better understanding of the situation,
when I have a few avenues to pursue, like these.

You're very welcome. I hope the information helps.

It is my opinion that when there can be various causes, it often helps the
poster to have more than one avenue to troubleshoot, and often leads to
their finding the cause in an area they might not have considered.
Additionally, I feel that it is as important to help the poster learn about
their problem and its cause as it is to cure it, as it will, hopefully, help
them prevent the problem from recurring. :-)
