Opening a folder via the mouse

Whenever I left click the mouse to open a folder the
Search screen automatically opens up instead of showing me
the contents of the folder. How can I correct this issue.
Everyone else that I have talked to state that their
computers will automatically show the contents of a folder
when they left click the mouse 2 times on a given folder.
I've spent way to much time trying to tackle this iisue on
my own. Help please
