OPENING A FILE

This may be simple for some,but I need help. Ihave installed XP over Windows
98 2ed all my old files are there but I can't get them to open. It ask what
do you want to open it with' how was it created.

It depends on what you mean by "my old files". You may need to reinstall
the programs with which your files are associated or you may need to
take ownership of the files. Tell us what "my old files" are for more
specific advice.

Windows creates associations of a files extension to an application as a
shortcut so you do not have to open the application first.

What probably has happened is that the installation of XP does not have the
association list anymore. This will happen if an upgrade was not performed.
If you installed Windows XP over another OS then you will have to reinstall
your applications (especially the one that your file was created from).
 
One of the files I was refering to is my 2004 income tax. I used Turbol Tax
to compute it. File search says it's there. How do I bring it back to life.

You get out the disk that the programme came on originally, insert it to your CD drive and reinstall the programme. If you don't have the original installation media, you have 2 choices. Go out and buy a new copy, or throw all your old files away. Simple as that.
