Please take advice from 'Andrew E' with a shaker of salt. He regularly
offers solutions to problems that were not posed, and should he actually be
on point, the recommendations are wrong. Always.
As to your question:
* 'Ad-Aware Plus' is NOT an antivirus program. 'Ad-Aware Plus' is an
anti-spyware application (see the web site of LavaSoft, the publisher of
'Ad-Aware Plus'

* Any good antivirus program will take an unnoticeable time to scan a Word
file as it is opened.
* If you do not have an up-to-date (virus definitions no more than a few
days old), always on antivirus program installed in your system, you very
likely have a system infected with malware (viruses, Trojan Horses, and
more.) Infection with such malware can slow your system down, steal your
data, issue spam and denial of service attacks, and spread the malware to
other systems.
* A more apt answer would be possible if you post additional information.
Information such as
- operating system
- installed antivirus program (if any)
- system type (CPU, speed, installed memory, free hard drive space.
* From the information you have provided so far, the signs point to active
viruses and other malware on your system
