Open .xls file from Explore window

I have a new problem with Excel, which appeared suddenly.

I can launch Excel from the Start menu, and open any .xls workbook.

But I cannot simply double-click a .xls file from Explore, as it
launches Excel ok, but fails to open the file, and just hangs there
until I close the window or end the process.

This method of opening spreadsheets worked fine until a few days ago.
Now this is driving me nuts! I even reinstalled Office 2000 hoping it
would fix things, but to no avail. Nothing I can do to the filetypes
(in folder options) seem to help either.

Help! I could use some pointers!

Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

<Tools> <Options> <General> tab,

And *UNCHECK* "Ignore Other Applications".

Occasionally the ignore other applications does not solve the problem it,
this happened to me once and then you need to follow the advice from Beth
Melton which I found and it solved my problem.

It sounds like is a problem with the file associations. Go to Start/Run and
run this command:
Excel /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

If you receive an error, you may need to browse to Excel.exe and include the
full path. It would look something like:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe" /regserver
