I want to be able to click on a Nikon camera raw format file (.NEF)
and have it open in Photoshop.

Photoshop has been on my machine for quite a while, yet when I use
Open With or Folder Options/File Types, Photoshop is not availble to
select from the list presented.

If I click on the Browse button and locate and double-click on the
Photoshop.exe file nothing changes. I can only select from the list
to change file type assignments.

There must be a way to do this, but I don't see it.

To associate a file name extension with a file type
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Folder Options.
On the File Types tab, click New.
Type a new or existing file name extension, and then click Advanced.
In Associated File Type,
Type or select New to create a file type to associate with the file name
extension.
-or-
Type or select a different file type to associate with the extension.

I don't have a copy of Photoshop on this machine so I can't test either of these suggestions, but here are two things I would try in your position:

1. Photoshop may allow you to set File Type Associations from a preference or file menu. If so, you can use Photoshop to tell XP to open .NEF files with Photoshop.

2. If number 1 isn't possible, and you have the Photoshop disks, you might try reinstalling Photoshop to be sure that it is registered. This might make Photoshop show up in the list of available in the various Open With / File Type XP dialogs.

Hope this helps,
George

Have you tried to go the other way? Open Photoshop first goto file then
click open file and browse for this .NEF image where ever it is.

This should solve your problem if photoshop excepts that file format. Also
if you use the program that came with the camera to open it you can save as
another format like gif, jpg or png which photoshop does recognize for sure.
I checked my PS 7.0 and do not see that format listed. There is raw format
..raw but not .NEF

You can go here and download the update for photoshop and maybe it will
solve your issue.

Hi all,

In addition: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - Scroll down to .NEF and modify open with.

Another avenue: Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types....
