thanks Mark, but it's happen not only with ".txt" extensions. I have
installed f.e. the irfanview program and configured the ".jpg" extension
to
this program. If now I want open a ".jpg"-file with another program I do a
rightclick, choose "open with" then (because my wish progam is not
displayed
on the shortlist) "choose program" and.... there is no choice for me, it
will
automatically open the ".jpg" file (or any other) with the
notepad-program.
May I fix this?
Thanks a lot for help

Ramesh's advice is a good one. However, you have to decide for yourself how
comfortable you are playing with the registry, and if it is out of your
comfort zone, the alternative is to take you back to when you say:: ""choose
program" and.... there is no choice for me". At this point, you have opened
a list of applications where your wish program is not included. Granted. To
go further and get what you want, click on the Browse button. You are now
presented with a dialog box where you can navigate through the different
directories and find where (in which folder) your wish program is stored.
For example, the Browse button lead you to the contents of the "Program
files" folder (I am not sure this will happen exactly like this for you;
this is the one I got two seconds ago when I did it). You then look around
and try to locate your wish program's folder, open it and select the program
itself (it is likely to be something.exe). Once selected, click OK for as
many times you need to close all the windows and you document would "open
with" will be opened by your wish program indeed. Do it once to make sure it
works before checkmarking it to always use this program to open this kind of
file when double-clicking all file with a given extension.
There is (finally...) an other location to associate file types with
programs: open any folder where you can see either volumes or files &
folders, go to Folder options under the Tools menubar. In the File Types
tab, you can scroll the long list of file extensions and change one of the
file type's (.txt for example) association with a given program. This is how
Windows and yourself decide together to open "letter to mom.txt" with
Microsoft Word, WordPad or Notepad when double-clicking on the file. A word
of caution: if you do anything complicated, it is always good to have a pad
where you write everything you change; it is a very smart way to go back and
change back to the original setting when you are not happy with your
results.
