Open windows won't display in the taskbar.

The problem I am having is that any open programswon't display as a button in
the taskbar between the Quick Launch area and the Notification area.
It's bloody frustrating because I have to continually minimize and Alt-Tab
to find the windows of the running programs that I need to access.

I've tried display properties, taskbar properties and everything else I can
think of in the Control Panel that might rectify this, to no avail.

If anybody might have a solution I would be eternally grateful.
