I got a new computer which uses xp. I need to open
floppies created on the old computer with windows 98.When
I try,I only get a dialog box that won't close. I see
that others have had similar problems with zip files-I
haven't tried any of them yet- it seems pointless at this
stage.

Copy the zipped files to the hard drive. Then right click on the file and
select Extract. If XP's built in zip/unzip program still cannot open these,
you may want to install Winzip or another third party zip utility.

I tried. I can't copy any thing from the floppy to the
hard drive. The a: drive indicator comes on and then it
hums along forever without doing anything.

Sometimes floppy drives are aligned a bit differently and you can run into
trouble reading disks created on another machine. Try this: Format a blank
floppy on the XP machine. Take it to the old computer. Copy a zip file or
any file to it. Bring the disk back over to the XP computer. Test to see if
XP will now work with the copied file.

Sounds like the 'a' drives are not compatable.

Since its only 1.44 Meg
If the old machine is still operating, read the file from the old 'a'
drive email the file to yourself.
Open the email on the new machine.

the e-mail technique worked for some files which were
not compressed. the zip files could not be re-stored on
my (a:) drive, something about "sector requested could
not be found" - corrupted by previous attempts?

"windows-delayed write failed"-- "unable to save all the
data"---"the data has been lost" BUT-i PRINTED A COPY OF
THE DATA THAT WAS SAVED- AND THAT WAS THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT-
NOTHING WAS MISSING. THE A; DRIVE IS STILL DOING A SLOW
CONTINUOUS READ- BUT NOTHING LIKE THE SOUND I GOT FROM IT

Sounds like things are progressing in the right direction as far as your
data is concerned. That new floppy drive sounds like it may be a little
iffy though.

I have had to replace more faulty floppy drives that were new,
right-out-of-the-box than I ever thought possible. In days gone by these
were reliable solutions for small file backups. Nowadays most computers
don't ship with a floppy drive.

Things to check:
--Antivirus program set to scan A: drive. You do not want to boot the
system with an infected floppy disk ever but unless you use a lot of disks
from outside sources, consider turning this off.

--Clear Document History - this will in turn clear the history for Run as
well. A shortcut to the A: drive in either of these locations can cause
excessive reads of the floppy drive. A weakness in Windows that goes back
at least to Win95. To do this: Taskbar & Start Menu Properties> Start Menu
page. Customize. Find the Clear button for the documents list and click.
Exact position varies depending on what style of start menu you are using
but once you're in the Customize area of Start page, you should find it.

--If you installed this drive yourself and it is constantly being accessed
(light always on), the cables are backwards. Correct them.

--Work with that drive a little bit more. Try creating a boot disk and test
to see if the boot disk works. If it doesn't work, the drive is faulty and
should be returned. Reminder to clear Documents History again after working
with the drive.

Hope this helps.
