"Open site" produces "FP has encountered a problem" crash

Whenever I use the File/Open site... menu item, FP 2003 (running under a
fully updated XP system) crashes with the "FrontPage 2003 has encountered a
problem" message box. Fortunately, I can open sites that got onto the "Recent
Sites" menu before this started happening, but I would be very glad to figure
out how to fix the problem.

I've run all options on the FPCleaner application; I've repaired the
installation. I haven't uninstalled and reinstalled, because I don't want to
lose that MRU list for Recent Sites (though I suppose I could save that
registry key). Everything else seems to work - it's only Open Site... that
crashes.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Does it crash by simply clicking Open site, or does it crash when you select
a site from the Open Site dialog that lists the site locations?

It crashes simply by clicking File/Open Site (or the similar item in the Task
Pane). I never get to see the Open Site dialog. Sorry for not filling in that
detail!

Have you recently installed or uninstalled any other office applications??
Have you added any "User Defined places" to the Open Dialog that normally
lists your sites??

Are there any sites listed in "My Network Places" that are not valid??

Close all office applications including FrontPage and using Windows Explorer
browse to:

%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent

( actually you can copy and paste it into Start > Run and click OK. )

and delete everything that shows in the "Recent" folder.

Yep, everything.

Then open FrontPage and see what happens.

Hi Steve,

No, haven't installed other Office apps; I added "User Defined places" to
the Office Open/Save dialog, but removed them after reading your message; I
completely cleared out the Recent folder as suggested.

Unfortunately, I still get exactly the same crash when using the File/Open
Site.. dialog.

I hope you won't give up on this - I'm very grateful for your help.

Edward

I forgot to add that I cleaned out My Network Places so that only tested,
real links existed there.

Download and install the free FP addin "Open Web" from
http://www.jimcosoftware.com/addins.aspx and try using it to open your web
instead of File | Open Site and see what happens.

Give me a few minutes.
I need to reboot into Windows 2K with FP2003 installed and run a file and
registry monitor
to see what FP is looking for when Open Site is clicked.

Problem solved: Steve's question about adding anything to the Places bar was
the clue. I use a utility called Dialog Box Assistant (www.xeletrix.com) that
adds hotkey-accessible drop-down MRU lists of files and folders to the common
dialogs. (Actually, the version on their web site doesn't have hotkey
support, but a service release available by asking the vendor does add
hotkeys.)

It works perfectly with everything else I've ever used, so I didn't suspect
it, but it apparently conflicts with this one dialog in FrontPage (there's no
problem with the File/Open dialog). By adding Frontpg.exe to the exclusion
list in the program's options, the problem went away. As I said, it was
Steve's question about the Places bar that suggested some problem with the
dialog box.

Apologies for any time-wasting caused by this question - and many thanks for
all suggestions.

Cool.

Glad to help and glad you resolved the issue.
My next question was going to be:
Did you restore the default toolbars with FP Cleaner??

Actually, I did restore the default toolbars with FP Cleaner - I tried all
the options in that program, but they didn't solve the problem.
Interestingly, I just tried a couple of other dialog box enhancers, and the
others don't conflict with FrontPage - but Dialog Box Assistant is, over all,
good enough to keep...
