Help!! I've got a database that I've set up as Read
Only. The problem is I need to go in and make some really
critical changes, but I can't figure out how to either
turn off Read Only or allow myself to set up security
differently. I really don't have the time to recreate
this database as a front/back end, so if there is an
alternative I would be eternally grateful.
Please respond ASAP - this needs to be fixed for tomorrow
(one of the changes is changing dates, and as it's the new
month, I'm really pressed for time...)...
Thanks a lot,
Chris

You think I would remember that. I think it was through
the Security or Startup options under Tools. But, then
again, with the way that my week has been going, I could
be completely wrong. The problem is that many of the menu
options have been greyed out as a result of the Read Only
feature, and so I can't check to see what is under
startup....I suppose I could check through another
database, but then how do I turn it off????
Thanks,
Chris

Well, without knowing what you did, I'm not sure I can tell you how to undo
it. However, since you mention startup, you might try holding the shift key
down while you open the database. That will bypass your startup options and
give you the full menus back, providing you didn't disable the bypass.

I tried "Compact and Repair Database" under Database
Utilities. Access told me that because it was a read only
database, I couldn't delete the existing one - I saved it
as db1.mdb, closed it, opened it, and I was able to make
the changes and save them. I then deleted the original,
renamed the new one so everyone's shortcuts still worked,
and away we went!! (It's not an ideal solution, but hey -
it got the job done!!) Thanks for your help.

That sounds like you, or someone else, actually set the read only attribute
of the file in windows explorer. In any case, I'm glad you figured out a way
to work around it.
