Open programs from an ftp site

Before insalling XP, I could open files directly from an
ftp site. When I try now, it open a new browser window
and states, "The page cannot be displayed."

How can I restore the old settings so that I can access
Word documents, pdf files, programs, etc. directly from
an ftp site?
 
Hello,

There is a function to see FTP folder in IE under the
Tools Menu in Internet Options in the advance tab. It's
under the browsing headline.
