Open page in a panel?

I want to open a new page within a panel (or similar container) on the
current page (rather than replacing the entire content of the current
window). Can this be done, and if so how ?
 
You can use an IFRAME, but be sure to check compatibility
with your target browsers. I've found IFRAMEs don't
always behave as expected. Sizing, for example, has been
an issue for me.
