Sun Microsystems, available on CD from www.alternativesoftware.org
for $6.00. Is this a good buy? I think I read here some time ago
about probs that some pple were having with the software. Your
comments much appreciated.

Since you can download it for free, I'd say any price above a penny is
too much.

Not for dial-up users - since the official CD comes with versions of
OOo for Windows and Linux, the minimal price of a CD can be well worth
it for someone who doesn't want to tie up their phone line for the many
hours it takes to download OOo on dial-up.

I have been using this suite for a long time, and its predecessor, Star Office,
before it. It's a great piece of software.
The six dollars for a cd is fine if you don't want to spend many hours
downloading the online version.
I recommend it highly.

You can get Open Office for $2.49 including all shipping
and handling. Most any open source OS or application
they have is $99 per disc. It's better than trying to get a
huge download on a slow (mine is 26.4) connection.
Never got a bad disc from them. I'll email the link to you
if you want. juzme

I used my employer's DSL connection to download it over night. I installed
it and used it just a little without problem.

It would probably be illegal for me to copy the program and send it to you
for postage and the cost of the disc and if I did I would charge about six
bucks. So I wont do that, Six bucks for vendor's copy and postage doesn't
sound bad. That's about the cost of a take out sub sandwich which is
consumed in less than twenty minutes!

Go for it!

No, it isn't. You can make as many copies as like, and sell them for
whatever you can get for them, or give them away - the beauty that is
the GPL.

However...I jumped too soon to respond. The Link is to a site for Linux &
BSD users. I'm still running Win 98SE.

If I gave you a site which will send you a Windows OOo CD for $2.50,
would you consider stopping top-posting and consider using standard
quote characters? ;)

I didn't proceed to checkout - if they tack on shipping, you may be
back up to $6 again, I dunno. If you want to have a look around
yourself, see <http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/#usacanada>.

You just didn't read the first line on the page. The CD contains versions
for Linux, Windows, and Solaris Sparc; all three. juzme

"standard", all right for now.

Right. Comprehension challenged. Got it, now. With shipping, back up to $6.
