This program has a higher learning curve than MS Office Suite,
but I'm trying to figure it out. I have a question about the
options initially at setup. Upon setup, one can choose to
have OO read MS Office Word, SS and/or XLS files. Is there
any way to click a box and DEselect those options? I am
asking because I'm testing the presentation aspect and would
like to know if MS Office suite programs can open and/or read
OO files saved with OO's file extensions. I set OO as the
default reader for the above mentioned programs now I cannot
check to see if MS Office can read OO's. Any information or
comments are appreciated. BTW, Susan, thanks. You've done an
excellent job with the pl site. I appreciate all your work.

If I follow what you are asking, you want to know is MS Office can read a
slide presentation that was created in OpenOffice and saved in the
OpenOffice format? Is this correct?

The answer is no as far as I can tell. OpenOffice has its own format
that it saves documents in. It is not proprietary like the MS Office
formats. It also compresses the files as it saves to be able to save
space.

You can howerever, use "Save As" from the File Menu and save your
presentation in PowerPoint format. This file should then be able to be
loaded into MS Office.

I believe your other question concerns file associations made by
OpenOffice during installation of the program. I believe you can tell it
whether or not you want it to open up MS Office files when you double
click on them. Once you have made this decision and have said yes, you
want OpenOffice to open these files, I don't know how you correct this.

There may be an easy way to do this, but you may have to search the
OpenOffice web site or the mailing list archives. There are links on the
OpwnOffice web site that lead to the mailing lists.

Hope the above is useful.

Thanks Frank. Yes, I was wondering if I composed a slide show in OO, if
someone with PPT could read/see it. I guess the answer is NO? But if
someone composed a slide show using MS Office's Power Point program, then I
could view/read that with OO's program. I will check the site and messages
for the answer to the question about setting OO to read/view MS Office
Suite's files. I have Office 2000, but I'm not overly fond of it because of
the excessive updates/patches. I ditched Word long ago, eventhough it has
some nice features. AFAIK with my currently extremely limited knoweldge of
OO's 'equivalent' of Power Point, I'm afraid the latter remains superior in
terms of ease of use (user friendly) and it is simple to learn. Most of
these programs I learned by just using them. Click a button and volia! But
with OO... wheee it's more complicated. For WP I like Atlantis and don't
really use OO's word that much. Thanks for your time and response.

You may save the presentation as a Microsoft Powerpint File (*.ppt) from the
File, Save As menu option within OO. The resulting file should be readable
from any Powerpoint Viewer capable of openening and viewing Powerpoint
2000/XP files.

Thanks for the followup. Your answer was more clear than mine.
