Their privacy statement plainly, plainly, plainy warns that they

You have been warned !!!!!

It plainly says the opposite, that Google employees will not read your
e-mail.

"Google's computers process the information in your email for various purposes,
including formatting and displaying the information to you, delivering targeted
related information (such as advertisements and related links), preventing
unsolicited bulk email (spam)"

So spamming is ok so long as it's them doing it.

I was sent a registration invite and I signed up - thanks Daryl. But now
I'm seeing sites and articles that warn about Google trying to googleya
when you least expect it. I dunno, but I'm leery about this. Having said
this I'll keep my account but not use it until sometime later down the
road when it becomes apparent that Google is not trying to googleus.
Just looking at the Google Hysteria on this NG it is obvious how a virus
or trojan is spread - this 'Add me..Add me' hysteria is just too funny
to watch without breaking up.
Incidentally, does Google have some major plan for this - why do I want
to store that amount of e-mail online? What's the deal?

I think I must lead a very boring life.

Everybody must have much more interesting and confidential e-mails than
mine. And I would probably rather have some sort of targetted advertising,
as opposed to the constant bombardment of untargetted advertising that daily
assaults my eyes and ears from everywhere else.

<sigh> Maybe I am just tired, or my paranoia levels are too low.......

Taking notes? Please quote that part here or shut the **** up.

So Dubya's stooges can snoop on you whenever they feel like it, no
court order required, 'cos you know, you're either with us or against
us, like that "terrorist" on the watchlist whose name is Edward
Kennedy, who amazingly shares a name with a senator who's got a bad
habit of annoying Republicans.

I remember when I was invited to Orkut a while ago, and I was totally,
totally, totally shocked by the amount of information they were
gathering, pages and pages of personal information forms to fill. I
had never seen anything like it before.

Now, if you thought gmail was bad, you oughtta have experienced the
orkut sing-up process. That said though, gmail is propably more

So once Google finishes collating your mail you won't be shocked when
they release the fact that you are a forty-nine year old cross-dresser
still living with your parents; you shop at Mr./Ms Big Clothing; your
credit card use at Fantasy Lingerie For Gay Guys is long overdue; your
unpaid parking tickets; your late night chat logs posted on your office
coffee room. Need I go on? If Google is going to googleus they have the
perfect opportunity, but maybe....

Put a double layer on your tinfoil hat, just in case.

And watch out for those black helicopters.

Oh, dear... I thought that had been happening all along. You *do* know
the whole 'internet thing' was created by the U.S. Military, don't you?
The U.S. Government has been tracking us since they created the
"Computer" using stolen alien technology!

For me, the benefit will be for the (non-public) mailing lists that I am
subscribed to. Posts archived together and fully searchable without
having to store them locally.

Hi Pat,

Now why the worry? Did you ever look at your OUTgoing mail with
EtheReal (or any other Packet Sniffer)? Everybody can snif your mail...
and intercept it... especially on cable connections... so why the
panic? Just use PGP (or any other mail encrypting software) and I would
love to see how G-Mail (or any other mail provider) will scan those
messages for words and do something useful (for them) with it <LOL>.

Remember: Sending an unencrypted eMail is like sending a postcard...
you never know who reads it and what they do with the information!!!

regards
Dick

Adverts displayed on the webpage isn't spam. You've just posted a
definition of Spam.

They have to pay for the bandwidth and storage somehow.

Oh but then again you're one fo those ****ing leeches aren't you? I
noticed you are using the Berlin University news server because its
free...

Also, how can they deliver "related information" unless they read your
email?

Ben,
I worked for the Canadian agency in Ottawa's Dept of National Defence
(the one with the high fence surrounding it) where just that was done in
concert with your country and others. The technology was not stolen, it
was leased from IBM, among others. Anyone who thinks their late night
cyber romances or e-mails are private needs their heads shaken. Big
Brother has been around for years and yes, there really are black
helicopters. Hollywood's representations have entertained you for years,
but it's not all fiction. And by the way, Hollywood is full of aliens -
they are the Canadians that make you laugh, help you enjoy music, and
entertain you as you watch the screen.
yes virginia, there really is a POKO

Fool! How do you suppose they can target you with specific product ads
tailored by what they find in YOUR email?! Osmosis?

The relevant section of fine print is

"Google employees do not access the content of any mailboxes
unless you specifically request them to do so (for example, if
you are having technical difficulties accessing your account) or
if required by law, to maintain our system, or to protect Google
or the public."

The last is the most relevant bit. To PROTECT = to VIOLATE
privacy. NB the phrasing does not indicate that they may access
the content of mailboxes *only* if the law requires it. They may
do so even when the law *does not* require it. Still - it's their
service, and they make the rules. If you don't want it, don't use
it.
