Open In Same Window

I have been vexed with finding a solution to my simple problem. When I
click on a link from outlook (in an email for example), I'd like IE6
not to open a new window, but reuse the currently open window. I have
searched and checked all of the appropriate boxes (reuse window, open
in same window), but outlook still starts a new IE window with each
click (it keeps going and going...). Same is true if I click links in
my RSS reader (multiple IE windows).

Any solutions to this? It's not horrible but it clutters up my
desktop.

Thanks,
Chris

This has been default behavior for years. Sorry, but there's no workaround.

Note, though, that once such a window has been opened, the same window will
be used for opening all successive links in email messages.

Thanks. I thought that this was true, but didn't know if there was a
way around.

Peace,
Chris

The workaround is to drag instead of click.
E.g. maximize or Fullscreen (F11) your target IE window
and leave your source window in normal mode above it.
Then instead of clicking on the link just drag it to the closest
patch of the target window which is showing and release
the mouse button.

It doesn't do that for me. A new window is opened, even if one is already
opened. How can I get around/fix that?

Thanks in advance,

See my suggestion to the OP about dragging the links instead of clicking on them?

However, if the discussion is really about Outlook and not Outlook Express
you might have better luck getting an informed answer on a newsgroup
which specializes in that product.

I'm only familiar with OE so the following description may not apply
exactly to Outlook. OE works for me exactly the way that PA Bear described.
It opens a window for it own use and then reuses it. OE used to have
(even still may have, according to some) a feature which allowed it to
open more windows than the first one by pressing Shift- when a request
was made to open the link. Such operations would depend on the use
of DDE requests by OE to IE; so an alternative which some users use,
in order to achieve the effect that you don't want, is to modify the DDE
Topic: value to System (from its default value of WWW_OpenURL).

If your symptom is in fact due to such an issue (and your version
of IE is not IE7) one way to repair the DDE Topic value (and other
registry values associated with the Internet protocols that IE supports)
is to Run... (e.g. press Win-R) and enter:

regsvr32 /i shodocvw.dll

BTW out of curiosity what do you see if you right-click on a link
in an E-mail when using Outlook (or use right-click on a link
while pressing a Shift- key?) In OE we (I) strangely do not
see an Open action (with or without Shift- on the right-click)
yet the link can be opened with LeftClick or Enter.
Hence it shouldn't be any more suprising that Shift-LeftClick
or Shift-Enter might do something different.

Thanks in advance,
Candy

Good luck

Yes, if you have an IE window open and you click on a link in an OE message,
a new window (#2) is opened. If you then click on another link in an OE
message, the link will open in this same window (#2) as the first link.
That's how it works.

To both Robert and PA Bear,

Well, I THINK I’ve got the problem taken care of now. I hope.

Yes, PA Bear, that’s how it USED TO work for me, back in the “golden daysâ€
of my old Compaq Presario and Windows 98.

I hate Windows XP. I hate IE7. I’m back to using IE6. I got a new
emachine, and Windows XP and EITHER IE version have never been the same
since.

I have been searching knowledge bases and old newsgroup postings for a
greater part of the afternoon (extremely difficult for one with ADHD) trying
to find a solution that will STAY once I make the change.

I don’t think I made myself clear to Robert in WHERE my problem was
occurring. It was in Outlook EXPRESS. I did all the regsvr32’s that I could
find. Robert, your one command in the above email was a little off – you had
an extra “o†in it – it should read:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

Somehow, a “%1†was added after the “-nohome†in my application used to
perform URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol. Removing that seems to make my
windows (and OE) behave the way I want them to. We’ll see the next time I
have to reboot or turn off my machine. ïŠ

Thank you to both of you for your help.

Well, now your encoding seems to be messed up (unless I manually switch to
Unicode - UTF-8).

So, what does that mean? What can I do about it? What steps? What can I
check? What can I change?

Oops. Thanks for the correction.

BTW (warning to IE7 lurkers, courtesy Ramesh). Don't try to register
shdocvw.dll with IE7 installed. For it,

regsvr32 /n /i ieframe.dll

seems to be the new alternative but it doesn't fix problems that registering
shdocvw.dll may create.

Thanks for the detailed report.

Good luck
