I'm getting some weird errors in some 3D games and in 3D Studio Max. This is
making my job impossible. My new computer has Vista on it and I really need
to get to work on my projects.
When I open 3D applications I get an error saying:

DLL <C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max g\stdplugs\DxPlugin\DxDDS.bmi> Failed
to initalize. Error Code; 998 - Invalid access to memory location.

This might seem like a obvious solution but did you try to:

1. Run the program as an Adminstrator (in case it's a rights issue)

or

2. Set the compatibility mode to XP Service Pack 2

Perhaps one of these two ideas might work.

Just a shot in the dark.

This kinda helps. The message still pops up, but when I make the program a
little smaller by scaling it from the bottom the issue goes away when I click
the window that is uses.
This helps, the program is usable... but it would be a lot better if MS
could fix the issue becuase the screen goes white when I click a few options
and have to re-hightlight the window. (the program has 4 view ports, each
showing a different view of the 3D model.)

Does anyone know what makes this happen? Does Vista handle 3D differently?

Okay, I found a solution for this issue.
Here is what you have to do in 3Dmax.
Go to the options and change the view port viewing method to SOFTWARE rather
than Direct X.
It works like a charm.
