Open file stopped working

When I click file--->open in an application like Word or Excel, the files and
folders are displayed. I can click on a file, and it will open. If I click
on a folder to find a file inside, the folder will not open, and the dialog
box stops responding. I have to close it manually, and get an error message
that "Open" has stopped responding. The open function worked OK until a few
days ago. I can still open the files by using "My Computer" and doulble
clicking the files. WinXP Media Ediion, Office 03.
